Generally, design and the weave of a carpet defines, its country of origin, but occasionally some pieces are found that the unique appearances defy their connections to a particular region. One of these examples is this antique handmade Heriz carpet in garden design. Measuring 300 x 215cm (9'8"x7') and made in the early 20th century, it belongs to the small town of Heriz situated in the North West of Iran. Heriz carpets normally contain angular medallions with bold geometrical motifs along their borders; instead, this fine Heriz rug has a garden or panel design. HThis however where the difference ends, as its geometrical borders and its abrash colours are very much reminiscent of Heriz carpets made around the early 20th century.
