The Caucasus region consists of Georgia, Azerbaijan, Northeast Turkey and North-West Persia. Travellers following the silk route heavily traversed the coastal regions. But the interior was highly dangerous and rarely penetrated by travellers. This meant that the traditional carpet. Designs remained unchanged for centuries as weavers did not come into contact with outside influences. The boldness of Caucasian rugs and Kilims in both the rigidly controlled geometric patterns employed and the strong colour patterns have an obvious appeal.
