Turkish Ghiordes silk and cotton prayer rug 155 x 117 cm

A very rare mid 1800 century or even earlier Turkish Ghiordes silk and cotton prayer rug measuring 155 x 117 cm ( 5 x 3.8 ft ). a finely stepped acute arch design with prominent shoulders, and two cross panels, one above and the other below the mihrab. The finely woven silk on silk foundation with Mehrab design appear to be a true charastics of original Ghiordes rugs made around 17th up to the mid 18th centuries. Town of Ghiordes (Gördes) situated in the Northeast of Izmir in Western Anatolia ( now in Turkey ) and together with the Kula and Ladik rugs from the surrounding regions have been prized in Middle East as well as Europe and United States. These rugs were delicately made with very light weight and soft silk foundation and often used as a prayer rugs during religion precisions. The original Ghiordes rugs were made with very fine silk on white cotton base but it has been observed that the ones made from early 19th century were having wool weft on cotton foundations. This rug has been professionally cleaned and washed and restored with one side having repairs where the pieces joined together and strengthen. Few minor areas of repair and reconstruction. Both ends however original. If you are looking for the rug belonging to almost couple of centuries then this is for you. Please note the rug is very light weight and slightly fragile and should be avoiding heavy footfall as expected from these types. It is a wonderfully decorative piece and not often appears in the open market.
