SOLD- Signed antique Chinese handmade carpet, measuring 275 x 165cm, which is 9ft by 5ft 4inches wide. I think was made circa 1900 with having lotus motifs flanked with scattered larger and small dragons with stylized cloud motifs, all on a pale white surrounded by striped multi colour boarder. I would like to draw your attention to the signature at the top end, which indicates the rarity of the rug. It was accustomed that members of the Chinese royal family specifically commissioned such rugs hence allow them to have signature. The rug is in good over all condition with very minor local wear.
Reference to old Chinese rugs:The earliest Chinese carpets known are from the seventeenth century. This suggest that the Chinese were late starters in the textile field, but it is inconceivable that this country, so advanced in other arts and crafts, should have been behind in this technique which was so prevalent in other parts of the orient. It appeared that Chinese motifs found their way into the early rugs of Turkey and the Caucasus, which also suggests that this vast country was participating in the craft much earlier than is supposed. Exporting carpets from China only started in 1850 and since then the product has undergone many changes to satisfy the appetite of the west. Regions such as Peking, Ningxian and Tibet have significantly contributed to Chinese carpet production, however the old antique Chinese belonging to the village weavers is still the most sought after. The artistic symbols used in Chinese rugs are common to all genres and techniques. This meaning has remained unchanged over many centuries. Among the most common is the fo-dog which represents protection from evil; the dragon, the union of earthy and celestial forces; the lotus flower; purity and summer; the pony, respect and wealth, the stag and stork, longevity, the cloud, divine power; the bat, fortune; Mountains and water, stability on a stormy sea; the swastika, cosmic rotation; and the ideograms Shou and fu, fortune.
