Antique Persian Afshar Sofreh Kilim rug, measuring 97 x 78cm, which is 3ft by 2ft 6inches wide. I think it was made around mid 20thcentury by Afshar tribe’s part of Qashgai groups. It is known that Sofreh (table cloth) was very much part of Tribes heritage in many centuries. The deigns of these types Kilims generally are very eye catching in particular some are very antique and sought after. This piece has lovely colour combination and is in good condition throughout. Reference to the Sofreh flat weave Kilims: The fascinating fact about the tribe groups whom been involved with Kilim weaving is that almost all of them have particular tastes when it comes to have Kilims for their own personal use. For example Qashgai and Bakhtiari tribes used very vibrant colours in rather busy design and patterns for the use which could be both as a tablecloth or space for keeping wrapped food. Tribes in Syrjan however have been using much-faded coloured Kilims, which are almost square but smaller for the similar use. Today Sofreh Kilims have become very much part of house decor. The key fact is that they give a fantastic look wherever they lay on the floor or hang on the wall.
