ART DECO HANDMADE WOOL RUG
This is an Art Deco handmade wool rug measuring 178 x 168cm (5’8”x5’5”) and was made around the last quarter of 20th century with having a floral motif central medallion in plain sky blue main field enclosed with narrow border in dark blue ground. It seems the rug was specially commissioned and made for Liberty of London and perhaps the floral motif is a reminiscent of the Liberty crest. Normally these rugs are made with using hand spun as well as vegetable dyed colours in good quality craftsmanship.
Reference to the Art Deco rugs: In the 1920s and 1930s there was a great vogue for abstract art Deco style carpets designed by artists, Architects and designers both in Europe and America. Plain often cream, blue and white rugs they became very much the taste for Modernists or minimalist homes, where they can be incorporated into a specific interior. Over the past three decades many of the Art deco rugs have been commissioned by specific name depending on their patterns and designs. The Art Deco carpets with a bit of age are highly sought after today and pieces belong to the top designers or institutions are very expensive.
