ANTIQUE SILK KUMPKAPI PRAYER RUG
This is an antique Silk and metal thread Kumpkapi Turkish prayer rug, measuring 155 x100cm ( 5' x 3'3" ). It was made around the early of the 20th century with having Mehrab or prayer main field surrounded with much detailed foliage’s, motifs and other objects in a magnificent interlinked inner and outer boarder. The rich cherry main field combined with multi greens, blues amongst other colours has given such an exquisite look to this rug. Reference to Kumpkapi silk rugs: From the end of 18th century, Turkish weaving, with two exceptions, entered a decline, which it has never really recovered. The exceptions are the Hereke weave and Kumpkapi. Kumpkapi were the successors of the Hereke. At the beginning of the Twentieth century when production at Hereke ceased, Armenian weavers under the master weaver Zare-Aga of Istanbul began to create silk rugs with gold and silver threads. These were embossed, but this time did not have pile of different heights. Here the rugs were made partly of pile, which stood out in strong relief against a background of gold or silver wraps and wefts without pile. The designs used were those of the great period of Persia; also there were intricate prayer rugs woven with verse from the Koran in the boarders, carried out in Intaglio with gold or silver wrap threads which gave subdued refulgence to the sacred words. These pieces were some of the finest ever woven and today command high prices in the world markets.

Standard deliveries to mainland UK addresses are normally made within 4 working days – Monday to Friday. Deliveries to all international addresses will take longer, but we endeavour to send all orders by the quickest route. For orders delivered outside the UK, we will confirm the anticipated delivery date to you.
