An Arts and crafts antique European machine made square room size rug measuring 330 x 323 cm ( 10.8 x 10.5 ft ). All- over angular floral motifs in rich palette of colours having white background field. The label says "Jas. Shoolbred & Co. Ltd. based in Tottenham court road London". This was a prestigious British furniture and design company active during the late 19th to early 20th century, known for selling high-end furnishings, including imported rugs. Given the Jas Shoolbred label and the rug likely dates from circa 1880–1920, making it approximately 100–140 years old. These types were imported from other parts of Europe notably Belgium or perhaps Sweden however I am not entirely sure the exact region where it was made. The design with bold motifs seen in old Turkish Ushak or original Zigler or Sultanabad rugs. The story behind it is fascinating and rug has remained in good condition with few spots of wear. It has been professionally cleaned and washed as when it was sourced it needed deep cleaning!? The back of the rug has some canvas sewn in each corner and it seemed it was joint together at the time of making. This rug really fascinates me and its history demonstrates it to be one of the original pieces ! The wool used very much vegetable dye since colours remain quite stable after wash with no indication of colour bleeding normally seen in artificial wool. It is ready to furnish your room and brings along with it an interesting history!?
