Afghan Ersari handmade wool rug circa 1880 5.6 x 4.6 ft

A genuine late 19th century hand-knotted tribal rug from the Afghan Turkmen weaving tradition mainly from Ersari group inhabited both in Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. It measures 170 x 143 cm ( 5.6 x 4.6 ft ), the field is composed of repeating octagonal guls, framed by classic geometric borders, all rendered in rich natural dyes.

The rug displays attractive abrash throughout the field, indicating traditional dyeing methods and age. The wool has developed a soft handle and patina over time. The rug has all the attributes belonging to finer pieces from the region with very soft wool and fine weave. The contrast of colours halfway from madder red to camel with the indigo patches remind us of the old natural dyed used which are very costly and time consuming in today processes. A highly decorative and collectible tribal piece suitable for both contemporary and traditional interiors.

It has been professionally cleaned and washed generally good pile with localised wear commensurate with age, one repair in the corner of one end otherwise good usable condition. Please refer to the images and let me know if you have any questions.
